SCORM & Moodle

SCORM and Moodle have historically been on-again/off-again friends. We have a better solution.

More information…

Moodle is the leading open-source learning management solution. The community is doing some fantastic things and has obtained remarkable adoption. Over time, though, the software has experienced varying levels of success in working with SCORM. (As we’ve mentioned many times, SCORM is hard.)

At the time of this writing, January 2009, Moodle has yet to be certified as a conformant LMS, even with SCORM 1.2 (released October 2001). The forums at [registration required] actually have more talk about SCORM problems than those found at ADL’s site. All that said…

SCORM in Moodle can be a real problem

In November 2008 we decided to integrate the SCORM Engine with Moodle. [See the related blog post here.] While we have not elected to offer it in any sort of open source arrangement, this integration of the products provides an elegant solution to a problem yet to be addressed in the Moodle community. The SCORM Engine allows Moodle users to experience world class support for AICC, SCORM 1.1, SCORM 1.2, and SCORM 2004. As with any SCORM Engine license, our support comes along with the license. This means that rummaging around in forums is no longer necessary.

“Does the SCORM Engine really work better than Moodle?”

Well, the proof is in the pudding. If you’ve made it to this blog post, you’ve likely experienced some frustration with the Moodle/SCORM modules. You probably have a piece of content that simply won’t work in Moodle. If you do, try it in the SCORM Engine by uploading it to a free account on SCORM Test Track.

We believe the SCORM Engine solves the SCORM problem for Moodle users

If you have interest in using the SCORM Engine with your Moodle installation, please get in touch with us. We’d love to work with you.
