When we talk about the benefits of using SCORM, the first one, the major one, the big one is definitely the ability to track what happens in your course. Now, your course and your LMS have to be set up to track the right things and plan to actually save the information. But once it’s collected, a huge world opens up to you, revealing much, much, much more that you might have realized possible.

Built into our SCORM Cloud product is a great reporting tool we call Reportage. (And yes, you can add it on to SCORM Engine as well, if you want.) It takes all the data collected by SCORM and puts it into a format that’s easy to parse and can even be downloaded so you can create your own reports.

Go for the overview report or drill down to find out what Johnny got wrong on question 4 and how his answer compared to the rest of the group. Parse by course, date or learner to get the picture of what your learners are doing.

What it looks like

Here’s an overview we presented at Campus Technology’s 2010 conference and the kinds of questions the SCORM reporting tool can answer:

Just a little more

Now you want to try it, right? Here are a few things more you need to consider before you get going. You’ll need a SCORM Cloud account if you don’t have one already (don’t worry, there’s a free trial level), a SCORM course and a few users. Well, users are optional. You could just take the course a few times yourself to get some data in there to see how it works.
